Planning
1. Pick a subject: while flipping can work across all subject areas, Math and Science are often easier to begin your flipping journey with. We recommend picking one of those subjects.
2. Pick a specific unit of study: Narrow down your subject with a unit that you think you may be able to find and/or create resources for.
3. Pick a specific concept: While entire units can be flipped, when starting we recommend dipping your toe in first by creating individual lessons to begin your experimentation. As you and your learners become more familiar with flipping you can increase this.
4. Pre-teaching: Make a list of any concepts or skills you will need to pre-teach your students before the flipped lesson.
5. Resource Hunt: Now it is time to find and/or create any resources you will need. Using our suggested resources (or you can search on your own if you feel comfortable) search pre-made videos, interactive websites and more for a resource that will work for flipping your lesson. Keep in mind that it needs to be age-appropriate and a quality resource. You could also decide to use one of the Create Your Own suggested resources to create your own video.
6. Put it Together: Now that you have your resource, how are you going to deliver it to your students? Via a blog? an LMS (Learning Management System- Moodle, Desire2Learn, Schoology, ect.)? A link?
7. The Activity: Now that your learners have engaged in the pre-teaching activity, what are they going to be doing when they are in class with you? Experimenting? Discussing? Working in Pairs or Small groups?
8. Troubleshoot: So that you are ready, pre-plan for what you will do if students do not or are unable to access the resource at home.
9. Evaluate: How will you and your students reflect on your first flipping experience? Students young and old can participate in surveys. These can help you discover benefits you never thought of, and issues you need to work out. This is an important step for flipping as you figure out what works best for you and your learners.
